2020 USC Cross Country Track & Field Coaches Clinic, Upper St. Clair High School, Friday, 26. June 2020

We are proud to announce Coach Paul Vandersteen (Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois) and Coach Dennis Barker (Nova Classical Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota) as our presenters at the 2020 USC Cross Country and Track & Field Coaches Clinic!
This event will be held on Friday June 26, 2020 at Upper St. Clair High School from 7:30am-5:00pm.
All coaches of Cross Country and/or Track & Field are sure to learn from this Clinic Event. We welcome Youth, Middle School, High School, College, and Post-Collegiate Coaches to register, attend, and learn from two of the best minds in the sport.

Paul Vandersteen of Neuqua Valley High School (Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach- Naperville, Illinois)  and Dennis Barker of Nova Classical Academy (Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach- St. Paul, Minnesota) will be presenters for the 2020 Coaches Clinic. Both Coach Paul Vandersteen and Coach Dennis Barker have a wealth of knowledge to share with attendees through presentations and question/answer sessions at the June 26, 2020 Clinic Event.

Coach Paul Vandersteen (Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois)

Coach Vandersteen has been successfully coaching Cross Country with his boys teams at Neuqua Valley High School since the Illinois public school opened in 1997. Well-versed at managing a large team (typically around 130 male runners), Coach Vandersteen's squads are respected as a distance powerhouse in the state of Illinois. The Neuqua Valley Wildcats have won three cross country state titles in the past twelve years. During that same time span, the Wildcats of Neuqua Valley have placed in the top four as a team in the state eight times. At the regional and national level, the Neuqua Valley Wildcats compete under the name "Naperville South" and have qualified for Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) five times since 2007. During the 2007 season, the men of Naperville South were crowned National Champs at NXN in Portland, Oregon. Throughout his career Paul has coached twenty different all-state athletes in cross country, including two Footlocker All-Americans.
Coach Vandersteen has joyfully accumulated over thrity years of coaching experience and is still going strong at Nequa Valley. Before guiding the NV Wildcasts, he coached at Peoria Notre Dame High School and Pekin Community High School. After a move to the suburbs of Chicago, Coach Vandersteen coached athletes at Waubonsie Valley High School. As a track and field coach, Vandersteen has had multiple state qualifiers in track and field, including a State Champion 4x800 meter relay team.

Coach Dennis Barker (Nova Classical Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota) 

Coach Dennis Barker has an extensive resume that includes guiding athletes to success at high school, collegiate, and post-collegiate levels of competition.  Approximately five years ago Dennis started the program at Nova Classical Academy (St. Paul, Minnesota) and has coached 18 MSHHSL State Championship Qualifiers, nine All-State finishers, and two State Champions at the High School level. Coach Dennis Barker was at the helm of the post-collegiate group Team USA Minnesota from 2001-2016. During this tenure, Barker coached 24 National Champions, including an Olympian and 2 USATF Running Circuit Champions at 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 10,000 meters on the track; the mile, 10k, 15k, 10 mile, half-marathon, 20k, 25k and marathon on the road; 4k, 6k, 8k and 10k in cross country.  Athletes he coached qualified for 30 U.S. national teams competing in IAAF World Championships in cross country, indoor track, outdoor track and road, and achieved 73 top three finishes in U.S. Championships. 
From 1994-2016 Barker was head cross country and track & field coach at Augsburg College. During this time he coached 308 All-MIAC performances, including 59 MIAC Champions, 54 NCAA Division III National Championship qualifiers and 17 All- Americans. Also an author, Dennis Barker, penned the book, The River Road  in 2016. The River Road, a historical novel of becoming a runner in 1972 was nominated for the Track & Field Writers of America Book of the Year.

Coach Vandersteen and Coach Barker will each present twice during the clinic, in the morning and the afternoon sessions.  Each of the four presentions will last 85 minutes.  (Presentation time includes 70 minutes for the lecture, and 15 minutes for questions & answers from the attendees.)  As a special treat, we will have both Coach Vandersteen and Coach Barker perform a Questions & Answers session together lasting 30 minutes.  This will be conducted for all attendees before the day's events have concluded.

This clinic event will be held at Upper St. Clair High School- 1825 McLaughlin Run Road, Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania 15241.  On Friday June 26, 2020, check in will begin at 7:30am in the main theatre lobby (near the LGI room), and the event will conclude at 5:00 pm.  All presentations will be held in the Large Group Instruction room.  Lunch will be provided in the cafeteria.  Short breaks will be structured throughout the day's schedule.

Who should attend?
Any Cross Country Coach or Track & Field Coach that wants to learn from the best minds in the sport should attend. Cross country and/or track and field coaches of all ability levels and age groups will be able to learn from the information presented at the clinic. What are the presentation titles and topics?
Scroll up to the clinic schedule towards the top of the page.  As presentation titles are formalized, they will be listed in the schedule.  
I plan on driving or flying to this event.  How close is the airport and Downtown Pittsburgh to the event location?
For travelers flying in, the event location is roughly 20 miles from Pittsburgh International Airport.  For those staying in the area before or after the event, there are plenty of hotspots in the South Hills area.  Access to Downtown Pittsburgh is approximately a 30 minute drive.
I noticed the event ends at around dinner time.  Are there any restaurants that are nearby for dinner on 6/26/2020- after the  event ends?
Yes, there are lots of great options for dinner the day of the clinic on 6/26/20.  The South Hills and surrounding area is sure to satisfy your food cravings.  Use the site location on a map to find plenty of options.  Last year we had a "social" at a local restaurant for attendees to have the option to continue conversations with the presenters and attendees.  We will post this information as we identify a place to have the "social" after the event.  Please note that attendees did have purchase their own food and drinks at the "social" after the clinic.
I am traveling from another state or far away and wish to stay in a hotel.  Are there any options close to the event location?
Yes, we have some options for those attendees that are traveling and wish to use a hotel for the night before for clinic and/or the night the clinic ends.  If you are traveling from far away, perhaps consider checking into a hotel on Thursday June 25, 2020 and exploring the area.  Then wake up refreshed on Friday June 26, 2020 to attend the clinic.  After the clinic ends, do some more exploring, spend the night.  Then check out on Saturday June 27, 2020 for your trip home.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Use the physical address of the Upper St. Clair High School; 1825 McLaughlin Run Road; Upper St. Clair, PA 15241 to locate the event location.  You may use any of the open parking spots in the lot facing the school.  Parking is free.  Enter the building through the Main Theatre entrance (middle arch) using the "Coaches Clinic" signs as a guide.
Are there any local running trails in the area?
Yes, if you are a runner, there is a local running trail approximately 2.2 miles away from the event location.  Follow directions to the Montour Trail Parking on Clifton Road.  The address is near George Washington Elementary School (515 Clifton Rd, Bethel Park, PA 15102).  You will know you are in the correct area if you pass Al's Cafe Restaurant, left turn onto Clifton Road and then pass under the JR Taylor Memorial Bridge.  You will see the Montour Trail entry.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
To speed up checking in at the event, you should bring a physical copy of your printed ticket or an electronic copy (on your phone or device) to check in at the event. We will have a list of attendees at registration, so it's completely fine if you don't have your ticket with you as well.

What's the refund policy?
Tickets will be refunded only if event is cancelled by the organizer.
Full refunds will be issued if you cancel your registration prior to 5/26/2020.  After that date, you will not receive a refund.
