Bay Area Flamenco Festival: JOSE MAYA Direct from Spain!, San Francisco, Sunday, 19. February 2017

"Latente" takes the audience to the deepest realms of a flamenco dancer’s soul. A powerful solo work Latente gives the beauty and strength of flamenco a fresh, dramatic turn. Maya’s explosive, virile style of dancing invokes the tradition — while his choreographies seem to pull flamenco forward, into the future. Choreographed by José Maya himself, this program follows the dancer on a quest of self discovery while an ancestral spirit guides him in this search for freedom and understanding. “Latente is a very simple show because I feel that flamenco is strong enough on its own and does not need other ingredients,” says Maya. “Just the guitar, the cante, a good dancer, good lighting and good sound. That is enough.”

Maya is supported by an ensemble comprising the exceptional Gypsy cantaores (singers) Juana la del ****, Enrique el Extremeño and Manuel Tañé, and the guitarist Pino Losada. The piece offers a narrative that moves, in 13 vignettes, from what critics have described as “tradition with a postmodern minimalist patina” to a fiery dialogue between dance and cante (flamenco song).

“The cante is my inspiration,” explains Maya, who cites Juana la del **** as his muse. “Her voice represents the ancestors and when she sings to me I am able to feel and assimilate the intangible part of my soul. Juana la del **** is directly connected to the source and her lineage is rooted in the great flamenco families of Jerez [de la Frontera, Andalusia]. It’s impossible to find anyone more genuinely flamenco than she is. It is a true privilege to have her in my show.”

JOSE MAYA was born in 1983 to a Gypsy family of intellectuals: artists, painters, actors and writers including dancer Fernanda Romero, painter Antonio Maya and the singer Gabriel Moreno. He began his dance career at the young age of 9, sharing the stage with top artists including Antonio Canales, Juan Ramírez, Joaquín Grilo and Enrique Morente. He began working at age 15 under the direction of his uncle Tito Losada and went on to share the stage with artists of the stature of “El Indio Gitano,” Joaquín Cortés and Sara Baras.
