Managing Pain During the Opioid Overdose Crisis | Steve Stanos, MD

In this presentation, Dr. Stanos will review both historical and current barriers to treating pain. He will also address treating pain amid overprescribing and now over-limiting opioid medications to treat pain. He will describe the state and federal initiatives to improve pain management and opioid addiction. This session will also include a demonstration of relaxation training, including Tai Chi.


Understand the dual public health challenges of the opioid overdose epidemic and high prevalence of poorly controlled chronic pain.

Be familiar with non-pharmacologic strategies to help decrease and manage chronic pain including cognitive behavioral therapy, physical and occupational therapy, relaxation training, and mind-body interventions like Tai Chi.

Understand recent state and federal initiatives to improve the management of pain and opioid addiction.

Identify different types of pain include pain from nerve injury, joint damage, and central changes in the nervous system like fibromyalgia.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Steve Stanos currently serves as Medical Director of Swedish Health System Pain Medicine and Services in Seattle, Washington and leads Swedish's comprehensive pain center, Swedish Pain Services. He is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Anesthesia. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. He has published numerous scientific articles related to pain management.
