About the artists
“…puts listeners into a state of deep, emotionally charged calm.” - Freistil (Austria)
Since 2011, REIDEMEISTER MOVE has explored and expanded the possibilities of sustained-tone music in just intonation for their instruments. Hayward’s self- designed microtonal tuba, and Williams’ previous work with Charles Curtis and LaMonte Young’s legendary Theatre of Eternal Music, provide the backbone for a sound based on purely tuned intervals, noise, corporeal rhythms, and spatial resonance.
The tuba player and composer ROBIN HAYWARD was born in Brighton, England in 1969. He studied classical music at the University of Manchester and tuba at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he graduated in 1991. In following years he was active in the improvised and experimental music scenes in Manchester and London. Since 1998 he has been based in Berlin.
He has introduced revolutionary playing techniques to brass instruments, initially through the discovery of the ‘noise-valve’ in 1996, and later through the development of the first fully microtonal tuba in 2009. In 2012 he invented the Hayward Tuning Vine, partly out of a desire to visualise the harmonic space implicit within the microtonal tuba. In 2005 he founded the ensemble Zinc & Copper to explore brass chamber music from an experimental music perspective.
CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS is a wayfarer on the body-mind continuum. His medium is music. B.A., University of California San Diego, PhD candidate, University of Leiden (Holland). His teachers include Richard Barrett, Marcel Cobussen, Chaya Czernowin, Charles Curtis, and Bertram Turetzky.
As a composer and contrabassist, Williams’s work runs the gamut from radio art, chamber music, improvisation, and installations to collaborations with dancers, sound artists, and visual artists. Performances and collaborations with Derek Bailey, Compagnie Ouie/Dire, Charles Curtis, LaMonte Young’s Theatre of Eternal Music, Ferran Fages, Barbara Held, Hans W. Koch, filmmaker Zachary Kerschberg, Christina Kubisch, Maulwerker, Charlie Morrow, Mary Oliver and Rozemarie Heggen, Ben Patterson, painter Tanja Smit, and dancer Martin Sonderkamp. This work has been presented in the usual North American and European experimental music circuits, as well as on VPRO Radio 6 (Holland), Deutschlandradio Kultur, the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona, and the American Documentary Film Festival.
MIKE BULLOCK is a composer, improviser, visual artist, and writer based in Holyoke, MA. Bullock has been performing since the mid 90s at venues across the US and in Europe, including Fylkingen in Stockholm, Sweden; Instants Chavirés in Paris; Café OTO in London; Experimental Intermedia and ISSUE Project Room in New York City; The Philadelphia Museum of Art; and EMPAC in Troy, NY. In June 2015, Bullock received a Performance Grant from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.
Bullock is the Philadelphia Ambassador for The Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland [KREV] and also serves as the KREV Minister of Fine Noise and Light.
Non-Event’s programming is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and administered by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.
