Wellness Cafe: Women's Health-Menopause, St Christophers Episcopal Church, Saturday, 16. May 2020

Menopause is considered a normal part of women’s aging process, yet many women are unaware of menopausal symptoms and its health effects. Menopause is not only a major cause of heart disease and osteoporosis, but it is also associated with hormonal changes that result in symptoms affecting women’s quality of life. Yet, research has shown, that while many women are bothered by symptoms such as excessive sweating (hot flashes) or mood swings amongst others, they don’t seek medical help to resolve these issues. In this Wellness Café, the definition and the phases of menopause will be discussed, along with the list of physical, mental and emotional symptoms and what to do to alleviate them. In addition, the discussion will address the cognitive symptoms of menopause such as forgetfulness and the inability to focus attention as a result of the cessation of estrogen production which plays a key role in in the health of cells in the brain that are used to form memories.
